This Rural Health Education Foundation satellite broadcast discusses the latest evidence and key considerations for rural practitioners when diagnosing and managing depression in adolescents and young adults. The initial broadcast will be this Tuesday 24 August at 8:00 pm (AEST). The program will be repeated next Friday 27 August at 12:30 pm (AEST). Congratulations to Corrine Webb, who is Practice Manager at Kookora Surgery in Griffith. Corrine is a finalist in the 2010 AAPM Practice Manager of the Year Award, to be announced at the AAPM State Conference on August 27. Over the next two months, some practices will experience a gap in services delivery and changes to staff who deliver our psychology services.  This is due to staff resignations and new appointments.
John Sheppard has been recruited as the Mental Health Services Coordinator and will commence on 6 September.  John has extensive experience in the fields of psychology and project management. 
Emma Kelly is a social worker with experience in counseling and will commence on 16 August, initially focusing on our mental health drought project.

Closing the Gap

Closing the Gap is a jointly funded Commonwealth Government and Council of Australian Governments. It aims to address gaps in health and education between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. With the support of the Commonwealth Government, Murrumbidgee General Practice Network has employed an Aboriginal Health Project Officer.

The primary goals of the Closing the Gap program are:

  • To close the gap in life expectancy within a generation;
  • To halve the mortality rates for children within a decade;
  • To halve the gap in unemployment

 

MGPN’s Aboriginal Health Project Officer will be working with the primary care sector and the Aboriginal community to promote the health related activities of Closing the Gap
